the continuing cold snap has prompted authorities in Doncaster to urge elderly people to keep warm to stave off serious illness.
Special events have been set up this month and next, to help OAPs obtain information about extra financial assistance they can receive, aimed at reducing the number of cold-related deaths.
Coun Patricia Schofield, cabinet member for Adult Services and Health, said: “Being too cold in the home is not just uncomfortable. Underlying health problems can be made much worse or even fatal by being cold.
“Sadly, during the winter months, 27 people die each day in the Yorkshire and Humber region as a result of being too cold in their own home.
“These are preventable deaths and, in partnership with Age UK Doncaster and NHS Doncaster, the council has secured funding to help our most vulnerable residents who may be at increased risk of health complications from living in cold homes.
“I would encourage people to take advantage of the support available this winter by attending one of our information events or by contacting our Warm Homes Healthy People team on 01302 735 006.”
Doncaster residents over the age of 70 are eligible for support from the Warm Homes Healthy People project, and a range of events has been arranged to give residents more information about the help available.
Visit the Redmond Centre, Carcroft, next Thursday, January 24, from 10am to 2pm; Stainforth Community Resource Centre next Friday, January 25, from 10am to 2pm; Armthorpe Community Centre on January 29 from 10am to 2pm; Mexborough Baptist Church on January 30, from 11.45am to 2pm; or The Place, Castle Street, Conisbrough, on February 1 from 10am to 2pm.
