Dentistry experts from Sheffield University are set to share the secrets of their trade for free with a new online course.
The learning programme – called Discovery Dentistry – covers topics such as the importance of a smile and ways of fixing broken teeth.
Sections of the course also reveal the meaning behind the letters and numbers called out by a dentist during a check-up, as well as how dentures are made.
The six-week course will start on Monday, March 3, offering three hours of learning time per week. There are no requirements for registration – all budding learners need is an internet connection.
Dr Chris Stokes, who is leading the programme, said: “Whether you are an aspiring dentist, or want to learn about the interesting multidisciplinary world of looking after smiles, we are inviting anyone with an interest in the subject to join us for an entertaining and insightful exploration of your mouth and the people who care for it.
“Lots of people would like to learn a bit more about what is happening when they go to the dentist.
“Running a course online means we are able to offer this opportunity to people around the world, not limited by geography or class size.”
The university has teamed up with a firm called FutureLearn to offer the service, known as a MOOC or ‘massive open online course’, designed to make higher education more accessible.
