A blind toddler who may never get to see his family has been awarded hundreds of pounds by a Sheffield charity through the 12 Days of Christmas appeal, backed by The Star.

Kieran Boden, aged three, from Frecheville, has had countless unsuccessful operations to restore his sight – and as he is unable to take part in everyday activities, Kieran finds simple, fun activities impossible.

But the youngster has now been given £500 by good cause Help A Child Have A Chance, which will pay for a padded, garden playhouse.

Kieran’s mum Gina said her son was born with cataracts and a condition called nystagmus, which causes uncontrolled eye movements.

“When Kieran was born, we didn’t know how much sight he would have,” she said.

“His vision has gradually deteriorated and it went completely about a year and a half ago.

“Because of his condition, we can’t just go out and buy him a normal game from a toy shop and he misses out on a lot so we are incredibly grateful to from Help a Child Have a Chance for their generous donation.

“The new playhouse will be padded so he won’t hurt himself if he bumps into anything and we’re also going to out lots of bean bags, soft toys and sensory activities inside.

“Despite everything he has been through in his short life, Kieran is such an amazing and inspirational young boy. I would do anything to give our son a better life and this donation will help us to do just that.”

The Star has teamed up with the charity to offer young people the chance to receive a slice of £10,000.

Grants from the charity pot are awarded to individuals aged up to 18, or groups, carers and educators who work with young people who are vulnerable or in need of funding.

Nominations flooded in following an appeal last month and the recipients of the cash are now being revealed.

Shirley Kilner, a trustee at the charity, said: “Kieran is a credit to his family and a truly inspirational toddler who we are proud to support.

“Although he may never get to know what Santa looks like, we hope this donation will have helped to make this Christmas special for Kieran.”
