A SHEFFIELD firefighter is raising funds for charity in memory of his son Archie who died at the city’s Jessop Wing Hospital after being born prematurely.
Jason Jenkinson, aged 42, from Rivelin, contacted Sheffield City Hall with the idea of getting as many celebrities as possible to sign a copy of the venue’s 80th birthday book.
He wants to auction the signed book with all proceeds going to the Sheffield Hospitals Charity, which supports the hospitals in Sheffield, including the Jessop Wing’s special care baby unit where Archie was treated.
Jason said: “Just more than a year ago, our son Archie was born prematurely at the wing and sadly passed away.
“Obviously, it was a terribly traumatic time, but the care we received – and still do – has been fantastic.
Jason said he and his partner Elaine Storer, aged 33, wanted to thank the unit in a special way by helping to raise money so other families can benefit from the specialised care they offer.
He said: “We wanted to do something a bit different and to spread the word about the charity as much as possible.”
Jason bought a birthday book from Sheffield City Hall as a Christmas present and saw Phil Oakey, from Sheffield band The Human League, had signed some copies to promote it.
He said: “I decided to buy another one and acts who perform at City Hall to sign, along with other celebrities.
“It will be brilliant to be able to give something back to the charity which really helps families deal with the trauma hundreds of people across the region face every year.”
Signatures so far include author Neil Anderson and musicians Richard Hawley and Wilko Johnson.
