AN INSPIRATIONAL woman who underwent major surgery to reduce her risk of developing cancer is preparing to walk 26 miles through the Yorkshire countryside to highlight research into the disease.
Julie Brown, of Royston, Barnsley, will join thousands of others at the inaugural Jane Tomlinson ‘Walk for All’ Yorkshire Walking Festival in the Yorkshire Dales on August 14.
Those taking part in the festival, organised by Jane’s family to celebrate her memory, are invited to raise money for various partner charities, and Julie has chosen to support Yorkshire Cancer Research following her involvement in groundbreaking genetic testing trials.
The studies led Julie to undergo a hysterectomy and double mastectomy after researchers discovered she carried a ‘faulty gene’ which dramatically increased her risk of cancer.
Yorkshire Cancer Research, which funds world-class research, treatment and diagnosis projects throughout the region, still has places for the festival. Visit www.ycr.org.uk to enter the 14-mile or 26-mile walks.
