PARENTS in South Yorkshire have welcomed the announcement that surgery at the county’s nearest children’s heart unit is set to restart from today.
Congenital cardiac surgery at Leeds General Infirmary will begin a ‘phased restart’ following the completion of the first stage of a safety review by an independent clinical team.
Operations were halted more than a week ago following concerns over the unit’s mortality figures.
Cassie Symms, from Dinnington, whose two-year-old son Zander has been treated at the unit, said: “I don’t believe it should have shut at all - but I’m so glad it’s reopening.”
Maggie Boyle, the hospital’s chief executive, said she was ‘delighted’.
