Hospital’s norovirus fight continues

BOSSES at Rotherham Hospital are still battling a prolonged outbreak of the norovirus winter vomiting bug.

The hospital today reissued an appeal for visitors to stay away from the site unless absolutely essential, as they try to get the extremely contagious virus under control.

A spokesman said: “The hospital has seen an increase in the number of patients with the virus over the last few days.

“The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is advising members of the public not to visit a family member or friend at Rotherham Hospital unless it is essential.

“This virus is expected during this time of year, however in order to effectively contain and control the virus we ask that if it is essential for people to visit the hospital, then our good visitor guide and infection prevention guidelines be followed.

“Fortunately, we haven’t had to close any wards and are containing the virus.”

The hospital has been battling an outbreak of norovirus since December, although bosses have consistently refused to reveal how many cases of the virus they have experienced.

A spokesman added: “The number of cases confirmed changes rapidly so an actual figure would quickly become inaccurate.

“The emphasis needs to be on self-care where possible, using tools such as NHS Direct and people taking a responsible approach to the virus by not visiting unnecessarily or bringing young children into the hospital.”

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Chesterfield Royal Hospital reported outbreaks of the bug in January.
