SHEFFIELD Children’s Hospital is sparkling for Christmas - after TV star Richard McCourt switched on the festive lights with a helping hand from one-year-old Ellie White.

Ellie, from Halfway, spent last Christmas in hospital when she was born with an inflamed bowel, causing breathing difficulties.

Surgeons had to operate before she was even a day old and then again eight weeks later.

Ellie, dressed in her Christmas best for the event, helped Sheffield’s Richard McCourt - one half of the Dick and Dom duo - to flick the switch.

She was helped by her big brother Noah, two.

This year Ellie will spend Christmas at home with her family.

Mum Anna said: “Ellie is doing everything she should be doing now and eating everything too.

“Ellie owes her life to the specialist skills of the surgeons who completely turned Ellie’s life around.

“We are so lucky to have The Children’s Hospital and the expertise within it so close to home.”

The crowd was in good spirits as the countdown got under way and St Thomas’ Youth Group, serenaded the audience with carols.
