ELDERLY people around South Yorkshire are being offered a new way of finding the right care services.
As part of moves to give care-service users greater independence, people receiving help from councils are now given a personalised budget so they can choose what assistance they receive.
My Budget Brokerage, based in Attercliffe, Sheffield, is offering pensioners help deciding the best provider.
Among those it has helped has been a 90-year-old man from Shiregreen who was looking for a dedicated personal assistant.
He had previously received help from a series of carers, but found they were turning up late, showing ‘little or no interest in him, talking on their mobile phones while administering care’, and receiving a ‘less-than-understanding’ response when he complained.
Through My Budget Brokerage, he has now found the right support and a dedicated personal assistant. The pensioner said: “They did everything they said they would do and maintained contact with us throughout, keeping us updated with progress.
“For the first time I felt as though what I wanted mattered. They explained my rights, how much money I had for my care and supported me to choose and hire my very own personal assistant to meet my care needs.”
A My Budget Brokerage spokeswoman said: “We worked with the client and his family to recruit a personal assistant and found the perfect person.”
