A Sheffield eye expert is urging city residents with a family history of glaucoma to get their sight checked.

Gil Vasey, optometrist and director of Specsavers at Crystal Peaks, is backing National Glaucoma Week, which starts next Monday.

People over 40 who have close family with the condition are entitled to a free annual NHS sight test.

Gil said: “Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness. People with the condition rarely have symptoms so it is essential they are monitored regularly.”
