Sheffield has been granted centre of excellence in rheumatology by a leading European health organisation.
EULAR (the European League Against Rheumatism) has granted the award based on Sheffield’s record in conducting clinical research into rheumatology.
The title is conferred on the university of Sheffield in partnership with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, becoming one of only five such centres of excellence in the country.
Professor Gerry Wilson, head of the department of rheumatology at the University of Sheffield, said: “Receiving this title is excellent news for Sheffield, and we are delighted to have been recognised in this way.
“Rheumatology research in the city is well developed and, thanks to close partnership working between the university and Sheffield teaching hospitals, we are able to contribute some excellent research to the field every year, which translates to improved patient care.
“This award will enable us to continue to develop our research for the benefit of patients.”
