A family have thanked a charity for its support while their daughter was treated at a Sheffield hospital.

Alex and Danielle Martin, from Sprotbrough, Doncaster, experienced every parents’ worst nightmare when they were told their newborn daughter Isabelle required an emergency operation.

Isabelle, who was born at Sheffield’s Jessop Wing maternity hospital, had a blockage in her bowel.

She was immediately transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for life-saving surgery when she was less than a day old.

Surgeons removed 75 per cent of her bowel.

Following the operation, Isabelle spent months in the hospital recovering.

During this time, Alex and Danielle were able to stay nearby in two of The Sick Children’s Trust’s ‘homes from home’, Magnolia House and Treetop House.

Alex has two other children, 12-year-old Jordyn and Kaden, aged eight, who were also able to stay while visiting their new baby sister.

Danielle said: “The best part about Magnolia House was it was connected to the hospital, so we were never too far away from Isabelle.

“We didn’t like leaving her, but knowing we could rush to her bedside in just a couple of minutes if she needed us was comforting.”

After 10 weeks in the critical care unit, Isabelle was transferred to the S1 ward and Alex and Danielle moved to Treetop House, on the top floor of the hospital.

Isabelle remained in hospital for a further four weeks before being allowed home, where her mum says she is now doing well.

Danielle said: “We are so grateful for the invaluable support we received from the trust.”

The Martin family are to hold a race night at Sprotbrough Country Club on Friday, February 27, from 7pm, to raise funds for the trust.

Entry costs £3 per person and raffle tickets, entering people into the races, will be sold at £1 each or £5 a strip. Tickets can be bought from Danielle on 07787 052933, the venue, or on the night.
