A CHARITY cricket match welcoming local stars will be played in Sheffield this summer, raising money for Cancer Research UK.

SIG Plc has organised the event in partnership with Horbury Building Systems in Rotherham - one of their biggest customers. The game will be umpired by Dickie Bird.

The cricket legend will also host a Dine with Dickie meal during the match teas interval to add more money to the pot.

Players will include professional footballer and former Owls star David Hirst and Seth Bennett, BBC Radio Sheffield’s sports reporter. Look North’s Dan Johnson will also MC the event.

Event organiser Gary Johnson said: “We are very pleased that the event is generating such passionate support, and it’s an honour to have celebrities like Dickie Bird and David Hirst throwing their weight behind the idea - not just by lending their name to the event, but by actively taking part and helping us to raise more money for our chosen charity.”

The event is on Sunday, August 7, with free entry and a free minibus shuttle service operating between Sheffield Interchange and Abbeydale Sports Club in Dore.
