it was all smiles for a Sheffield dental practice when they scooped a national award in honour of a campaign taking the message of oral hygiene onto the streets.

Thompson and Thomas Dental Practice in Middlewood Road scooped the prize at the national Dental Awards for their efforts last year as part of National Smile Month.

Even though their event had to be postponed when practice manager Jane Armitage became ill, the team was determined the campaign would go ahead.

The result was the Better Late Than Never, Dentists On Tour event in October - three months after the official awareness campaign - which also merged with a Mouth Cancer Action initiative, which had been due to follow in November.

Jane explained: “I was diagnosed with a chest condition prior to the launch of National Smile Month which resulted in any large scale event being postponed indefinitely.

“As the Better Late than Never event was so close to Mouth Cancer Action in November, we combined the two campaigns so both could benefit.”

The campaign saw them dress up in National Smile Month T-shirts to run a stall offering competitions, raffles, and information on all aspects of dental care in Sheffield city centre. They also raised money for the British Dental Health Foundation, Help A Hallam Child, Mouth Cancer Awareness and St Luke’s Hospice.

“The response was quite breathtaking,” she added.

“We had a remarkable response from the Sheffield public - in total we spoke with approximately 4,000 people!”

Jane said everyone at the practice was delighted to pick up the award, presented to them in a glitzy ceremony in London.

Sophie-Marie Odum, chairman of the judging panel and group editor at Purple Media Solutions, said: “The event was a huge success. I would like to thank those who entered and congratulate all the winners.”
