A BUILDER who had not exercised for 20 years has swapped his hi-vis vest for a running vest as prepares to take on a half marathon challenge for charity.

A BUILDER who had not exercised for 20 years has swapped his hi-vis vest for a running vest as prepares to take on a half marathon challenge for charity.

Simon Meadows, owner of SM Construction Ltd, has vowed to give up the booze and overhaul his diet as part of his training for the Great North Run in September.

The 42-year-old will be raising money for the Everyman’s men’s cancer charity and the local Shine project, which works with overweight and obese children to boost their confidence and educate them about sensible eating habits.

Simon has already dropped half a stone with the regime but still has three more to reach his target weight of 13.5 stone.

He hopes the results will raise some much-needed charity funds at the same time as boosting his health and fitness.

He has sought advice from friend Kath Sharman – who runs the Shine project – who has given him diet and nutrition advice which will help him as the distances he covers in training for the run increase.

He said: “Basically I was just your typical builder – I hadn’t done any exercise for about 20 years and I’d much rather tuck into a Mars bar than an apple.

“I’d also never done anything to give something back so I thought I’d do something to raise some money and make some kind of contribution.

“Everyman is a very important national charity and the work Kath does here in Sheffield is fantastic – she’s done so much for such a lot of people.”

Out have gone the pints of lager and packets of crisps, replaced instead by an alcohol-free diet and bags of grapes to snack on.

Simon, of Holly Grove, Intake, is also steadily increasing the number of miles he covers on his early-morning runs, ready for the 13-mile race.

“It is hard work,” he said, “but it is slowly but surely getting a bit easier.

“It’s good to have something to work towards, especially when they are both such good causes.”

He looks like he's offering "services". A wash out then a banana sir? Perfect.
