Sheffield MP David Blunkett visited the city’s Dementia Cafe in Hillsborough as part of Dementia Awareness Week.
The Alzheimer’s Society claims 6,500 people in Sheffield have dementia.
Mr Blunkett said: “As all of us hope to live longer, we also need to join together in putting in place the support necessary for individuals and help to carers.
“From memory loss to Alzheimer’s, the number of those affected is growing by the day and if we are to take the fear out of this challenge, the kind of self-help and support provided by meeting places like the Dementia Cafe will be vital.
“This, together with the financial backing that is so necessary to avoid a crisis for the family, will assist in ensuring that dementia does not hold the kind of fear that over the years has been most prevalent with the ‘Big C’.”
