Fundraisers can make their Christmas trees shine bright – as well as helping Sheffield cancer patients.

The Christmas Star Appeal is taking place for the second year running in aid of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, backed by The Star.

People who donate money to the campaign will receive a silver star decoration to hang on their tree in recognition of their gift.

Last year, the appeal raised more than £20,000.

And the charity is hoping to beat that total in 2014 with help from new sponsor Napoleons Casinos.

Helen Gentle, hospital fundraising manager, said there was an ‘incredible response’ in 2013.

She said: “This year we’re hoping to raise even more money to prevent local families in the future going through the difficult ordeal that thousands of families are currently facing.”

Donations can be made via post, online at www.christmasstarapppeal.org.uk or by texting WPCC14, followed by the amount being given – £1, £3, £5 or £10 – to 70070.

Supporters will be able to send messages for inclusion in a special book which will be displayed at the hospital.

Fundraisers can also show their support for the appeal by submitting photos of themselves with their silver stars – using the hashtag #starselfie – on Facebook and Twitter.
