BLADES fans will be hoping a blessing of Bramall Lane by the Catholic Bishop of Sheffield helps to turn their fortunes when the new season starts next month.
The Rt Rev John Rawsthorne carried out the service with Monsignor William Kilgannon, from the Mother of God church on Abbeydale Road.
Club chairman Chris Steer, director Scott McCabe, club ambassador Tony Currie and devoted Blade Kevin Bradley were also at the blessing.
Bishop John, who said prayers and sprinkled Holy water, said: “A football club, in the heart of a city like this great one is, can work to bind people together and be an influence for good. Sheffield United is held in great regard with good reason. It has a great family spirit and operates in a really inclusive way in the city.”
Mr Steer added: “Today was not about us winning or losing but about our spirit and our influence for good in the community in the city and in the region.”
