Hospital staff who go beyond the call of duty can be nominated for an award.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ Thank You awards recognise unsung heroes who provide excellent patient care, make improvements to the service and give inspirational leadership.

Last year, senior nurse Sue Sharpe won the customer care award for her work as lead nurse looking after dementia patients in orthopaedics and training WRVS volunteers.

Management chiefs said she was a ‘shining star’ for teaching other staff to look after frail patients well.

National presentations and visits from other teams wanting to do something similar in other hospitals also followed.

Sue, who works at the Northern General Hospital, said: “I was overwhelmed and emotional and honoured I had been recognised for doing something I loved. Hopefully, my enthusiasm has rubbed off on others within my profession.

Other awards categories include hospital volunteers, staff who have improved services, behind-the-scenes staff and quality patient care.
