FEMALE jockey Hayley Turner, who trained at a South Yorkshire racing college, has become the first woman to win a Group One race outright.
Hayley, aged 28, who trained at the Doncaster-based Northern Racing College, sprinted to the finish to win the July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday with horse Dream Ahead.
She and trainer David Simcock were delighted with the 7-1 victory in the £226,000 race.
Hayley said: “I got the ride a couple of days ago and although I had never sat on Dream Ahead before, I tried to treat it as just another race.
“If you go out there with confidence, things happen for you. We had to wait for a gap to come but the horse had the class to quicken clear when we got room.
“This is a tough job sometimes, but you just have to be laid back about the bad days. When something like this comes along it makes everything worthwhile.”
