Hawley 'impressed' with new music venue

A NEW era has dawned on Sheffield's music scene with the resurrection of one of the city's biggest nightclubs.

Empty for years, the former Roxy as a throbbing hub of Sheffield nightlife was a distant memory - until last night.

Now it has been reborn as Sheffield's newest live music venue, rivalling the likes of the Leadmill and Sheffield City Hall.

Crowds queued to fill the 3,000-capacity venue, now renamed Carling Academy Sheffield, as a line-up led by local star Jon McClure, and his band Reverend and the Makers, took to the stage.

The sold out opening night was also graced by the presence of one of Sheffield music scene's most famous names - Jarvis Cocker - who returned home from Paris to be a special guest DJ at the after-show party in one of the venue's side rooms.

Cocker, fellow Pulp veteran Steve Mackey, and Coles Corner singer Richard Hawley all mingled with guests, and Hawley told The Star he was "impressed" with the new venue but said he hoped it wouldn't harm the success of other venues.

Following the gig Jon McClure treated city centre revellers to an impromptu acoustic gig outside Ruskins bar in Tudor Square with his guitar, watched by a large crowd that gathered quickly around him.
