I COULD hardly believe when I read (February 2) that English Heritage, after last year’s damning report on the neglect of some of the city’s historic gems, has heaped praise on Sheffield, declaring it “a terrific role model” for rejuvenating the heart of the city.
However, considering this was the body that deemed Park Hill flats worthy of Grade II listed status, then it not so surprising. Have English Heritage got the right city, or are they wearing blinkers? For, although several “landmark projects” have been created, Sheffield City Council is still seriously neglecting our Victorian heritage by failing to protect many of our ancient buildings and monuments.
