Happy couple dance down memory lane
Lily and Ron Crossley
A COUPLE returned to Sheffield for the first time in 18 years – and their family ensured the visit was front-page news.
Ron and Lily Crossley were treated by their children – Suzanne, Christopher and Elizabeth – to an overnight stay in a city hotel as they enjoyed a two-day visit.
To mark the occasion, their family created a special memento – a magazine cover carrying a picture of the couple in their prime on the dance floor at the City Hall.
Ron, a former engineer, and Lily met at the venue just after World War Two, when Ron, who served in the Royal Air Force, asked Lily to dance. Within a week, he had proposed.
Now aged 90, they returned to dance in the City Hall ballroom for the first time in more than 60 years.
From Hackenthorpe, the couple left Sheffield 18 years ago for Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. They now live in Clitheroe.
Suzanne, 50, said: “Mum made the most of her time in Sheffield visiting old friends and family and dancing the night away in La Foret bar in the centre of Sheffield.
“On Saturday afternoon, we took mum and dad to the City Hall. The staff were amazing and couldn’t believe mum’s age.”
