YOUNGSTERS put their new playground to the test at the launch of a Sheffield community park given a £400,000 makeover.

Handsworth Forum hosted the event to officially unveil the new park off St Joseph's Road which now boasts a new children's playground, a multi-sports area, a teenage zone and a quiet garden area.

There was a host of activities organised for the event including a car boot sale, bouncy castles, archery and football competitions, as well as the opportunity to explore the new attractions.

Maurice Littlewood, chairman of Handsworth Forum, said: "We celebrated the new park, but also the hard work that forum volunteers have put in.

"The Park Steering Group and myself have spent hours and hours in meetings to make this park a reality. We acknowledge too the support given to us from the city council."

And this is only the beginning - as more money is needed to pay for lighting, more play equipment, trees and paths.

The project, which has been delivered by the forum and Sheffield Council working together with Breeze Landscapes, has mostly been funded by the reclamation of the old quarry site at Finchwell Road which has provided new housing at the Barratt Home's Gateway Development..

Annual summer fun days organised by the forum have also added to the fundraising total.
