A WALKER discovered a hand grenade in a Sunday afternoon drama as he strolled in a quiet Sheffield village.

The man found the grenade in a field on Gas Lane, Eckington, and took a photograph of the device on his mobile phone before contacting the police.

Police sent the image to bomb disposal experts at the Ministry of Defence who then agreed it was a grenade.

Experts were then called out to the scene and a 100 metre cordon was put in place around the site where it was found.

A controlled detonation was carried out and the grenade was taken away to be safely destroyed.

A police spokesman said the grenade was found at 12.48pm on Sunday, December 30, and the incident was closed by 3.45pm.
