HUNDREDS of people are due to attend a gypsy funeral this week and there has been controversy about where in Sheffield to site caravans to be brought by visiting families.
Travellers are due to arrive on Thursday, May 3, ahead of the funeral the next day, in Derbyshire. Sheffield Council said most of the visiting travellers are to be accommodated at Holbrook gypsy camp, but they were looking for a site for ‘overspill’ visitors.
Initially, the car park at Westfield football pitches was chosen but sports clubs complained. One parent, whose son plays for Killamarsh junior FC, one of several teams using the fields, said: “Nobody from the council initially contacted the clubs to let us know. We still have games to play at the weekend.
“Although we were told the vehicles would only use the car park, it can only fit 10 to 15 vans and we were worried they could spill on to the fields.”
It is understood a car park on Rother Valley Way is being considered to house extra visitng families.
