A TOTAL of 360 people attended a protest meeting against plans for a new gypsy camp in a South Yorkshire neighbourhood.

Pogmoor residents gathered at the Barnsley suburb’s Hospital Club and were joined by a representative for Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis.

They are unhappy about plans by Dennis Lycett, of Pogmoor, to develop a 20-pitch gypsy camp on former industrial land off West Road, which has been derelict for eight years.

Barry Lowe, one of the organisers, said: “The meeting was a great success. We discussed how to move forward with the campaign. It was decided to set up a neighbourhood group and raise funds to help fight the plans.”

The next action proposed involves sending information leaflets about the scheme to all properties in the area. Further meetings are also planned by the group.

Barnsley Council has not yet set a date for when the application will be considered for planning permission.
