A child of courage and a Paralympian were the special guests as more than 100 people attended an event to launch the countdown to the 2014 Disability Games in South Yorkshire.
Yorkshire Child of Courage winner Thomas Holmes, aged 15, a pupil at King Ecgbert’s School, Dore, Sheffield, who has cerebral palsy but has won medals in disabled sport Boccia, and Paralympic table tennis player Susan Gilroy, gave presentations. The evening was held at the Holiday Inn, Dodworth, by Barnsley Rockley Rotary Club, which is organising the games at Barnsley Metrodome next March.
Rotary member Stephen Woodcock also raised £340 for Shelterbox, which is sending help to the Philippines after the typhoon.
Representatives from sponsors Irwin Mitchell LLP, B Braun Ltd, Caremark Barnsley, Home Instead Senior Care, Greencore, Sytner Sheffield and Barnsley’s Escape Pool Bar attended.
■ Barnsley Rotary celebrated nine decades with a meal at the Holiday Inn. The 90th Charter event raised a further £486 for Shelterbox.
