A NEW ‘Peace Tree’ will be planted in a Sheffield park to symbolise tolerance and understanding between the city’s different communities.
Community representatives are gathering at the Bellefield Street entrance to Ponderosa Park, Upperthorpe, at 1pm on Friday, to plant the weeping beech sapling as part of preparations for the 2011 Peace in the Park festival.
Peace in the Park is Sheffield’s largest free community music and arts event and includes a showcase of artistic, musical and vocal talent.
A spokesman for the festival, which is being held in June, said: “The weeping beech is a symbol of the festival because there is one at Endcliffe Park where the festival was held for years. Now the Ponderosa has become the home of Peace in the Park, planting the tree will be a beautiful way to celebrate.”
