A call is being issued to groups across Barnsley to sign up for this year’s mayor’s parade next week.

More than 40 groups are set to take part in the parade, which has a Tour De France theme and will take place on June 14 at 11.30am in the town centre.

The 148 Barnsley Air Cadets, Barnsley Blackhearts roller derby team and the Steppin’ Time School Of Dance are among those already signed up to take part.

Several charities are also taking part in order to raise their profile, including Marie Curie Cancer Care and Barnsley Mencap.

Mike Moran, of Barnsley Mencap, said: “The mayor’s parade helps us fly the flag for Mencap in Barnsley and raise awareness about what’s available locally for people with learning disabilities, as well as being a fun experience for our service users. We are also self-funded so it’s an opportunity to enlist volunteers.”

Coun Tim Shepherd, who will be Mayor of Barnsley when the parade takes place, said: “I’m pleased to see such enthusiasm for the parade. It’s a wonderful event that brings so many people together. It’s always been the more the merrier, so I urge any groups that still want to sign up to do so as soon as possible.”
