Gritters will be out in Rotherham this week – but to test new technology rather than preparing for bad weather,
Rotherham Council’s fleet of 10 gritting lorries will take to the streets tomorrow.
A spokesman said: “The drivers – part of a team of 40, who are City and Guilds qualified – will be putting the vehicles through their paces as part of a trial of their ‘automated salting’ technology.
“In a change to the weather they usually have to endure, the drivers, who are on stand-by 24 hours a day, seven days a week between November and March, will be able to enjoy the spring sunshine as they start their training in preparation for the coming winter season.
“The public are advised that as part of the trial, a small amount of salt may be spread in some areas.”
