Gritters in action after South Yorkshire snowfall

News: Latest from The Star.

News: Latest from The Star.

GRITTING teams in Sheffield are still clearing roads across the city after more snow fell.

Sheffield Council’s Streets Ahead team said it worked throughout the weekend and will continue to do so.

Contractors Amey gritted priority routes in preparation for the snow, and started clearing it as soon as it settled.

The team is now clearing snow from side roads, estate roads and others off the Priority Routes.

Chris Morris, Amey’s operational director, said: “We were well prepared for the snow and were out throughout the weekend spreading grit a number of times in advance.

“We started clearing the snow as soon as it first settled and will continue throughout the day until the roads are clear.

“Although it rained in the city centre throughout Sunday, we saw continual snowfall on higher ground and worked round the clock to clear snow as it settled.”

Key areas around the city centre, hospitals and shopping centres were also gritted on Sunday.

Snow flurries are expected to ease this morning with largely dry weather for the rest of the day and Tuesday.
