Greens call for end of Sheffield retail scheme

GREEN Party councillors are calling for Sheffield’s long-delayed new Sevenstone retail quarter to be scrapped after developer Hammerson missed an important deadline.

The company was supposed to lodge full planning applications by Friday, November 30 – but has not yet done so.

John Mothersole, Sheffield Council chief executive, says talks are still ongoing to get the project under way.

But the Greens say they want the council to ‘look away’ from Sevenstone and implement a ‘stronger focus on making the city centre a great place to live as well as to work and visit’.

Coun Rob Murphy, Green member for Central ward, said: “Our council should prioritise small and medium-sized local businesses.”
