Green project wins award
A PROJECT to improve the environment around Hillsborough has been highly commended in Sheffield's Community Environment awards.
The Green Hillsborough scheme has involved local volunteers revitalising open spaces at Holme Lane and Dykes Lane, placing new planters on Hillsborough Corner, encouraging record numbers of local entries into Sheffield in Bloom, and working with local schools.
Wendy Wells MBE, from Hillsborough Forum, which represents residents and businesses, said: "We are pleased to have won this award. It's all thanks to the efforts of local volunteers who have taken their time to come and support Green Hillsborough."
The forum is now planning for a Hillsborough entry into Yorkshire in Bloom in 2009.
Also highly commended at the awards was Hope on the Streets, a city-wide initiative by local churches to get involved in environment projects.
