Green gooey book boosts charity
A CHILDREN'S book developed by the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters' Society is hoping to boost kids' interest in reading at the same time as raising cash for good causes.
The story - Max and the Suspicious Green Gooey Thing - is not about football, although Max the dog does live on a barge called The Hillsborough Owl.
It has been written by Andy Spong, with illustrations from Kathryn Saunby, and input from Peter Shaw - senior vice chairman of the Wednesdayite Society, who became involved as part of the club's commitment to the community.
The idea of the book is to help boost literacy in Sheffield - encouraging reluctant readers aged between nine and 14 to pick up a book, and parents to share a good story with their children.
And 1 from every copy sold will go to the Children's Hospital Charity and another 1 to Wednesdayite's Smile Tickets scheme, which provides match entry for sick and disadvantaged children.
Peter said: "It's a really fun, humorous book which sees Max get up to all sorts of disgusting things!
"Although it's not a story about football it would be nice to think of other supporters' clubs around the country following our lead to do something for the benefit of the local community and fundraising for good causes.
"Football fans can get a bad press at times - this is one way of redressing the balance."
