Green Day cut off fan's locks on stage - VIDEO

ALEX Lantrua-Kissack wasn't expecting things to get so hairy when he went to see his favourite band Green Day at Sheffield Arena.

By the end of the night, the die-hard fan had not only shared a hug with his idol - lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong - he'd also shared a mic as he performed to the thousands-strong Arena crowd and had his hair hacked off in a wild stunt by Armstrong.

Alex, who previously had long hair down to his chest, was pulled out of the crowd at random at the Green Day gig to sing one of the band's songs Long View.

Lead singer Billie Joe took a backseat while Alex bounced around the stage singing the song note-perfectly, got the audience clapping and singing and even ended on a stage dive to deafening applause.

The most memorable moment for many though was when Armstrong said to the Sheffield lad: "Before we get started, can I get a pair of scissors and cut off all your hair?"

After a moment's hesitation Alex agreed and a stagehand ran on from the wings with a silver pair of shearing scissors which Armstrong promptly used to cut off Alex's hair right up to his chin.

The 16-year-old said: "It was awesome. I wasn't nervous until somewhere in the middle of the song when I suddenly thought, I'm singing with Green Day at Sheffield Arena!"

His hair, slightly wonky at the front, is better than any autograph and Alex has no plans to straighten it up anytime soon.

"Billie Joe cut it that way and that's good enough for me," he said.

"Luckily I'd been thinking for a little while about getting it cut, so when Billie Joe asked, I thought what better way - at least I won't be able to back out at the last minute like I probably would have done at the hairdressers!"

Since the show the band's arena gig, fansites and forums have been buzzing with Alex's impromptu performance and hair cut.

"A lot of people said it had been staged and I was reading this thinking, no I'm really here and it really happened!" said Alex, of

Kingsley Park Avenue, Millhouses.

The Silverdale school student has sung and played in band since the age of 10 and is currently lead singer and guitarist of This Way Up, a three-piece Sheffield-based band.

"Our bass player was at the Green Day gig and she came up to me afterwards and said 'I guess we'd better that one in the set now then!' - it was such an unreal experience."
