THE doors to Sheffield’s largest ever Tesco supermarket opened today - creating 300 jobs.
The new store in Saville Street, near Spital Hill, was due to be officially opened at 10am by Margot Walker, from St Luke’s Hospice, and store manager Mark Collings.
Mark will hand over a cheque for £1,000 to Margot, before cutting a ribbon and declaring the store officially open.
Among the attractions at the grand opening ceremony is the world’s fastest two-seater shopping trolley.
Mark said: “We are looking forward to the launch and are pleased to be able to support a great local charity that provides an invaluable service to the residents of Sheffield.
Margot said: “St Luke’s is Sheffield’s only hospice, offering free, end of life care to people across the whole of Sheffield.
“Every year we rely on the generosity of Sheffield people to keep the hospice open so Tesco’s kind donation will be put towards running costs.”
More than 300 staff have been recruited, including single parents, those who have never worked, older staff and those who have been made redundant.
They range in age from 16 to 62.
The store was also involved in a scheme to recruit long-term unemployed workers.
A total of 117 staff, who got their jobs via Tesco’s Regeneration Scheme, have graduated from an eight-week training programme designed to get new members of staff back into work.
The graduates were presented with their certificates by David Blunkett MP.
Mark said: “I’m delighted to have so many new staff on board as a result of our recruitment partnership and I’m confident plenty of the new employees have the skills needed to progress within the store and the company.”
He added; “I would like to take this opportunity to invite the residents of Sheffield to visit the new store and we hope they are pleased with what we have to offer.”
At the launch there will be complimentary cake and refreshments.
There will also be some fun and games.
Shoppers visiting the store between November 7 and 13 from 9am to 5pm can ask for a Lucky Plate to be attached to their trolley.
Lucky numbers will be announced over a tannoy and winners will get a £25 Tesco gift voucher.
As well as the grocery store there will be a cafe, phone shop and petrol station.
The store’s opening hours are from 6am on Monday, every day for 24 hours until midnight on Saturday.
On Sundays Tesco Extra will be open from 11 am until 5pm with the petrol station being open 24 hours a day.
