Good news at last for steel

GOOD news concerning our steel industry! Now, it is not every day we are able to say such a thing.

But today is one of those rare occasions when we are delighted to bring not one but two upbeat stories about local manufacturers.

Finnish owned steel firm Outokumpu has returned to profit with sales up by almost 80 per cent, helping to turn a pre-tax loss of 105 million into a 63 million profit.

And the company is confident that it will continue to build on its successful start to the year, showing that there is at last light at the end of recession's gloomy tunnel.

This is echoed elsewhere in the east end of the city, where Sheffield Forgemasters is targeting the global market for equipment used in hydro electric power stations.

By joining forces with the British Hydropower Association, the company will be seen to move even further into the renewable energy market.

Both stories show that there is some ground for optimism for the future of the city's highly regarded manufacturing sector and we look forward to bringing you more good news of this nature in the future.

Let's keep this bit of history alive

IT'S a scene as English as you could find anywhere: cricketers take to the wicket against a beautiful backdrop of unspoilt countryside.

But the outlook could be gloomy for members of Totley Sports and Social Club who are concerned that their old changing hut has been condemned.

It is home to runners and footballers as well as cricketers and there is a feeling that the poor facilities have led the teams to under-achieve over the years.

However, the sportsmen of Totley are determined to change all that with plans for a replacement. But first they must find the 140,000 replacement costs and have launched an appeal which is now just 35,000 short of its target.

We wish them well with their fund raising. The club dates back 100 years and the city deserves to hang on to traditions of that kind.

Get behind Tristan

WE are really on song with our appeal to raise 1 million for a specialist ward to deal with Cystic Fibrosis sufferers at Sheffield's Northen General Hospital. For the appeal has been given support by singer songwriter Tristan Drew who is working on a charity single to raise money towards the 12-bed in-patient facility and it will be performed for the first time at a concert this week. This is a great boost for the appeal which aims to provide a desperately needed ward for patients of this debilitating ailment and we urge all music lovers to support the appeal and get behind Tristan's efforts.
