Beating carrots, peas, tomatoes and broccoli to a pulp, the humble yet super food spud has been crowned nation's favourite vegetable (here illustrated by 13 reasons why potatoes are awesome and world's top ten healthiest veg content).

We are apparently turning up our noses at 'trending' veg people post in recipes on social media with celeriac, avocado, sprouts, turnip and kale as well as celery singled out as least loved legumes.

Parsnips, squash, beetroot and leeks are all included in top 10 in survey of 2,000 people by family-owned farming and food production company Mash Direct.

The poll reveals, although the avocado was named as most 'pinned' ingredient on Pinterest in 2015, one in five adults has never actually eaten one.

Children voted seasonal fare Brussels sprouts their least favourite veg and, like their parents, spuds as top of the plots.

And, despite the huge variety now available, a third of adults say they stick to same vegetables their parents did.

Company director of marketing and food trends Jack Hamilton said: "It just goes to show the old favourites are still first choice when it comes to family meal times.

"As family budgets might not stretch to seemingly popular vegetables, parents are serving classics they know and were served in their childhood."

He added: "It's really interesting to see how parents' likes and dislikes affect their children's choices. Just over half of parents admitted they would never buy a particular vegetable without knowing how to cook it beforehand."
