BRITISH sprinter Leon Baptiste cheered on hundreds of Sheffield pupils as they stepped out in a fundraising event.

The Great School Run saw scores of youngsters run 2km at Meynell Primary School, Southey Green.

Leon, who won the 200m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, encouraged children to get fit and raise cash for charity Mary’s Meals.

He said: “It was great to support the pupils.

“It’s important we get kids to enjoy participating in sport from an early age and the run provides the perfect opportunity to do that.”

Karen McSweeney, Meynell acting headteacher, said: “The children have been raring to go and it has been a great experience for everyone involved.”
