Glassed girl battles back

A SHEFFIELD University student is just one step away from getting through to the finals of the Miss England beauty competition - despite getting glassed on New Year's Day.

Alexandra Homayoonpoor, who is in the third year of her journalism degree, was in a city centre bar in her home city of Leeds when she was struck with a glass.

A lout who knocked over all the glasses on her table threw one at her when her boyfriend challenged him and his pal about their behaviour.

Alexandra was cut on her nose and had to undergo surgery on New Year's Day to repair the damage.

The 21-year-old said her confidence was at an all-time low after the attack but once her injuries began to heal she entered the Miss Leeds beauty pageant after her boyfriend took some good photographs in which her injury could not be seen.

"I had no confidence at all, the injury to my nose made me feel ugly but then my boyfriend took some photos where you couldn't see the damage at all," she said.

"I saw the Miss Leeds competition advertised and thought I would love to take part and that I had nothing to lose, so I gave it a go, but deep down I thought my nose would put them off me.

If Alexandra wins the competition in Leeds, which is judged next month, she will be put through to the finals of Miss England.

"I can't believe I have got this far after everything that happened.

"When I finish my university course I am going to try to use my experience to campaign for plastic glasses to be used in pubs and clubs and at major events so that nobody else has to go through this.

"My injury was bad enough but could have been even worse."

The yob responsible for the attack has not yet been caught. Police are investigating.
