Gladiators and giant bear battle in Sheffield's Peace Gardens - VIDEO

BATTLEGROUND would have been a better name for the Peace Gardens when a gladiator, Roman soldier and fearsome giant bear fought it out in the city centre.

The trio came, saw and conquered with their finely-honed combat skills at the event, organised ahead of a celebration of warriors at Bolsover Castle this weekend.

Warriors Through The Ages, which takes place on Sunday and Monday, will see Romans, Vikings and medieval knights take over the castle near Chesterfield.

The Norsemen will demonstrate battle tactics and the brave knights will fight in the 'tournament of foote'. Visitors can also take a wander through three living history encampments and witness daily life in days gone by.

Paul Harston, from Roman Tours, said: "Children will have the chance to meet the gladiators and cheer for their champion. We're also on the look-out for adventurous adults interested in training to be a gladiator."
