Give children some stability
IT will be with mixed feelings that readers will learn that Sheffield is to share in a £200 million Government funding package which will investigate ways of building bridges between the various agencies and services which look after our young children.
The idea is to bring children and family services together on single sites around the city. The theory is good: to make it easier for professionals to share information and expertise and to make it easier for families to receive the help and guidance they need to make sure their children develop to the best of their potential.
However, Sheffield seems to have endured more than its fair share of pilot projects over the years in this area...and still the authorities appear to be groping for a new and different way of moving forward. This suggests that the social engineering experiments visited upon our children in the past have been far from the runaway success stories we had been promised.
What we expect from the authorities is stability for children. Constantly throwing money at the next-big-idea has to date failed to provide that.
Generosity which lasted 75 years
SHEFFIELD should be proud of its place in history as the first place in Yorkshire to begin providing library services for the ordinary men and women of the city.
And this year gives us a tremendous opportunity to show that we still treasure our willingness to provide learning and enlightenment to the public as he Central Library and Graves Art Gallery celebrate their 75th birthday.
The significance of the occasion should be appreciated for its wider context. For the building was developed thanks to the generosity of city philanthropist JG Graves, who wanted to bring 'art and knowledge to the everyday lives of Sheffield's residents'.
This was achieved during the depths of the depression of the 1930s. And today, as we look once more into gloomy economic forecasts, it is reassuring to know that the legacy of a great man such as John George Graves continues to be celebrated in Sheffield.
