Girl who beat disease a model patient now

A TEENAGER from Sheffield had her image preserved for posterity - after fighting off cancer as a four-year-old.

Jenny Martin, aged 17, from Dore, was sketched by artist Bing Jones before sashaying down the catwalk as a model at the Art in the Gardens event at the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield.

Thirteen years ago Jenny was diagnosed with childhood leukaemia and was treated at Sheffield Children's Hospital oncology unit.

Now a fit and healthy A-level student at Henry Fanshawe School in Dronfield, Jenny wants eventually to go on to university to study musical theatre.

The schoolgirl was one of a group of amateur models who took to the catwalk for a series of eco-fashion shows throughout the Art in the Gardens event.

The shows - highlighting 'green' designs made from recycled material - raised 945 through raffle ticket sales for the Parents' Association for Children with Cancer and Tumours, PACT.

Jenny's mum Inge, who helped sell tickets, said: "I owe so much to PACT for the support I received when Jenny was a baby girl, when we did not know if she would live or die.

"Thankfully she pulled through and is living proof to others that cancer can be beaten.

"The many people who bought raffle tickets all had stories of loved ones who had either died or survived, but the main message is we must continue to help children undergoing cancer and support their families.

"I am always happy to help PACT as I feel so blessed my daughter is here today and others are not so fortunate."

Four 'Floral ImPACT' fashion shows were planned for the weekend - and the sun shone for the first three.

But thanks to a downpour the fourth and final eco-couture show had to be scrapped, as spectators ran for cover in artists' and exhibitors' marquees.
