A ghostly white bicycle has been placed at the scene of a fatal road smash which killed a much-loved Sheffield dad.

The bike has been painted white and has a bouquet of flowers attached to it in memory of Eric Codling.

Eric, aged 55, from Millhouses, died after he was struck by drink driver Emma Egan, last November, on Whirlowdale Road, Whirlow.

She is currently serving a four-year jail term for causing his death by dangerous driving.

The cycle has been placed on Whirlowdale Road to mark the spot where the married dad of two lost his life.

Eric’s wife Karen Codling has organised a sponsored event called Ride for Eric in his memory which is due to take place on Sunday, September 21.

Karen said: “We have placed a ghost bike at the place where Eric was killed.

“This is to encourage safe cycling but also a memorial to Eric. It is the first one in Sheffield.”

People can still take part in the charity event. There are three routes to chose from – a 6K route for families and novices, 16K or 50K.
