A Sheffield Star journalist has been awarded a broadcast journalism award from the industry’s leading training body.

Multimedia journalist George Torr was one of nine trainee reporters recognised at the recent National Council for the Training of Journalists exam awards, which recognises the top performing students taking the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism exams.

George, who achieved the best combined result in the broadcast exams while studying at The Sheffield College, said: “I was shocked when I found out. I was typing up some court copy when the news came through. It’s nice to be recognised in this way and I’m very proud of the award.”

Journalism courses are based in the new £8.8 million facilities at The Sheffield College’s Hillsborough campus, which include new television, photography, radio and performing arts studios.

College Principal Heather Smith said: “I’d like to congratulate George, and the staff who aught him, on this fantastic success. We equip our students with the skills that employers need and this award win is testament to that.”
