Have your say

The Botanical Gardens Café is a well used facility which has been mentioned frequently to me since I was elected this year. I am pleased to say it now has a new tenant and refurbishment work has been undertaken and it has re-opened. I am glad a new operator is in place.

Remember well

I PLEAD guilty for I know little of the city of Sheffield today, but I remember when Sayers the butchers had a very busy shop at the top of Dixon Lane. Street traders were numerous and Kings, at the bottom of the lane, only sold quality produce. The pub was often referred to as the Cow Shed. I remember it well.

Bill will punish the vulnerable

Buried at the back of the Government’s bill to reform how criminals are punished are proposals which could punish vulnerable people injured through no fault of their own.

It is an affront to justice that people with the most serious injuries could be denied the chance to pursue fair redress, as the ability of lawyers to fund complex cases on a no-win no-fee basis will be restricted.

Moreover, it is grossly unfair that an innocent injured person would have to pay some of his costs from his much-needed damages. Damages are carefully calculated to put lives back on track, not to cover legal costs. It is only right that wrongdoers are held to account for the injuries they cause.

Richard Meggitt, member Assn of Personal Injury Lawyers, S11

What a pathetic justice system we have when the judge only gives one of Sheffield’s most prolific burglars four-and-a-half years. He will serve 18 months. He should have got at least 10 years. But we have a weak and very poor system that is on the side of the criminal every time. You can see all this from the sentences and appeals. When are we going to see real jail terms handed out? We are a laughing stock of the world!
