SHEFFIELD Council’s ruling Labour group have denied claims that it will cost £180,000 to fully restore the opening hours of Graves Art Gallery.
Opposition Lib Dems highlighted the figure when they criticised Labour for only reinstating some of the opening hours at the facility, in the city centre.
Ruling councillors have restored £80,000 to the budget of Museums Sheffield, which runs Graves. They say the £180,000 figure would have been the cost of reopening the gallery had it been closed down.
Labour added that as the museum has remained open under reduced hours, the actual cost of bringing back the old hours, six days a week, would be £66,000.
The additional funding being provided to Museums Sheffield has been used to partially-restore opening hours at Millennium Galleries and Weston Park, as well as Graves Gallery.
This means Graves is only having its hours extended by opening four days a week instead of three.
