THIS is the extent of the wind damage to a £50 million new supermarket in Sheffield after gale force winds battered the county.
One roof panel blew off the 80,000 sq feet Tesco Extra store and others began lifting in gusts of winds which the Met Office said reached 93mph in High Bradfield, near Sheffield, at the height of the gales overnight on Wednesday into Thursday.
Emergency services were alerted to the damage to the supermarket – between Saville Road and Spital Hill, near The Wicker – because of concerns that huge roof panels could cause serious damage if they blew off.
One did come loose and a number of others started lifting up in the winds, but firefighters managed to climb onto the roof to secure some of the panels temporarily until contractors arrived to carry out more permanent repairs.
One of the escalators was taken out of service on Thursday, but it was back working yesterday.
Duty manager Matt Jagger said: “The store was open as normal despite the wind damage.
“One of the escalators was out of service as a result of the damage, but we have another escalator in the store, so customers were not inconvenienced.
“Repairs to the roof are still under way.”
