A SHEFFIELD women’s football team has raised more than £1,000 for charity, smashing its fundraising record for the second year running.

Nunny’s Funky Boots raised the money at its annual six-a-side tournament when players turned out in fancy dress for the season’s curtain-raiser at Sheffield Hallam’s Collegiate Campus.

The total comfortably beat last year’s record of £750.

All the money is being donated to local charities Sheffield Steelers Wheelchair Basketball team and Boots for Africa, who collect old football boots and send them to poverty-stricken communities.

The team also held an auction selling off sports memorabilia.

Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Sheffield FC, Rotherham United and Sheffield Eagles all donated prizes, as did South Yorkshire-based Formula One team Marussia Virgin Racing.

Organiser Katy Nunn said: “Everyone really threw themselves behind our fundraising efforts and we’re so pleased to have hit our target. We had fantastic support from local clubs and businesses.”
